WHY I DONT MAKE NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

It’s that time of year again, time for the good old New Year’s resolution.

Time to “resolve” to do something or not do something in 2015. Or, well, as far into 2015 as you can make it. Or, well, at least the first month…or week…or well, at least Jan 1. But Jan 1 is a day off, and there are parades and football – lots of football. Oh well, we’ll try again in 2016.

Who has done this before? I know I have and that is the problem with resolutions. Resolutions require perfection. The first time you fail, you “break your resolution” and it’s over until the next year. You can see it in the gym parking lot, January it’s hard to find a spot, by February you can get one in the front row.

Instead of making a resolution, commit to a lifestyle change and be ready for some “imperfection.” None of us are perfect; the best we can do is wake up each morning and try again. A popular sports talk show ends the show by pointing out the hosts’ mistakes and then saying they will try to do better tomorrow. It’s really the same with us – we try to do better tomorrow. So rather than “resolving” to something specific that requires perfection, commit to a lifestyle change and try to do better each day. The change does not need to be drastic either, baby steps work. Start with exercise or diet or shoot for both. Just keep at it, don’t let your commitment die like the broken resolution. Stick with it.
